I'm trying to figure out how to make gradient borders for countries on a vector map in Illustrator. I'm aiming for something like this: but with the gradient borders being more pronounced, a stronger gradient for borders. Can this be done in Illustrator and what would be the correct effect to use?

I tried using the Stylize Inner Glow effect but the problem is that I get this result:

Not sure why this occurs, but the any layer I apply an inner glow to suddenly looks blocky or no longer smooth:

I have "Object Selection By Path Only" option enabled. Yet, I am still able to select the center of a hollow shape. This is very frustrating when attempting to marquee select objects over/inside hollow shapes and having selected larger shapes by accident. This is new behavior compared to older versions of Ai and is jarringly unexpected. If anyone could please enlighten me, it would be a huge help. Thanks!

Check your Document Raster Effects and probably set to 300 ppi. Easiest way is to use Object>Path>Offset path with a negative number. Then Object>Expand and set the fill for the lightest version of the color. Then make a blend between the two versions of the path.

Go to the Appearance panel and set the left set of icons to the left one.

select your paths, all of them, bring up the Attributes Panel and click on the "Don't Show Center" button, now no center point, no selection.

If your files are too large, an option is to use vector shadows instead of the default raster shadows.

Make a copy of the text

Fill the copy with black and no stroke

Move the copy to the back

Adjust the offset

Lower the opacity of the copy to taste.

The only thing this does not do is blur, you could add a blur but that would just rasterize it, making the whole process moot.

When i want to select all objects of the artboard by Ctrl+A it also selects guide. How can i eliminate guide from the selection.

it's like there are some places where you can't drag the path or whatever ..., i have this problem A LOT which lead me to change the Whole design in that part . please if can someone help me, thank's in advance .

In cases like this, the first guess is Align to Pixel Grid.

You may select everything and then untick Align to Pixel Grid in the Transform palette, and also untick Align New Objects to Pixel Grid in the flyout options.

You may avoid document types with that as default (RGB for web and the like) or change the default for such documents.

If you mean the black shapes of varying width showing the hand and face, you may start/do it in this way for each:

1) Create the basic shape (one of the edges) with a stroked path;

2) Move a copy the desired distance in the desired direction (down to the right for the hand, a bit up to the right for the face);

3) Adjust Anchor Points as desired (such as (some of) the ones at the mouth);

4) Select the inner path and Object>Path>Offest Path to create the path for the Path Type, delete unwanted segments (the end segments and the opposite part); you may Type before or after going on with the shapes;

5) Connect each pair of paths to form closed paths, and reshape the end portions as desired;

6) Add fill and remove stroke.

I'm sorry, but I don't know much about Korean writing systems. Is it somewhat like Japanese? If so: would it help if you activate the Asian language options in Preferences > Type?
